Stephon Heyer: Will Change Make for More Tackles

Twenty-seven year old Stephon Heyer played football for the University of Maryland from 2002 through 2006.  His college football career was successful.  In his second year, he was rated as the second lineman on the team, and in his junior and senior years he received national credit for his performance as a tackle.  His college football highlights include playing in the Hula Bowl in 2007, playing in the Champs Super bowl, and being included in the All-bowl team selected by ESPN.  Heyer also achieved honorable mention listing as a lineman in 2006.

After college, Stephon Heyer was not immediately drafted to a professional team and became an undrafted free agent.  He did not have to wait long, however, as the Washington Redskins picked him up in 2007.  His play for the Redskins is probably best described as mediocre and in 2011 Heyer found himself without a team to call home.  News in August 2011, however, states that the Oakland Raiders have picked Heyer up.

Sports analysts have mixed opinions on the impact Stephon Heyer will bring to the Raiders.  Although he possesses strength out of the pocket and experience with the tackle position, Heyer does not have the agility or athleticism that the most successful defensive players tend to exhibit.  Most analysts believe Heyer will be put into a backup roll on the Raiders team.  That does not mean he brings no value, however.  Heyer’s experience will be a boon to the Raiders, and his ability to come out strong early in a play may save the quarterback and allow a winning throw in tough game situations.

Reports from Raider’s practice indicate that Stephon Heyer was seen repeatedly in an unfamiliar position, however.  Instead of the right tackle position, the Raiders are putting Heyer through left guard maneuvers in practice.  Analysts attribute the possibility of Heyer filling in for the left position to the fact that current left guard, Daniel Loper, has not been a successful replacement for Robert Gallery.

Regardless of which position Heyer plays, his college career shows he has some aptitude.  It may be that the right coaching and team atmosphere is all that is needed to bring out the talent of this bulky offensive lineman.
